Just realized a lot of people are struggling with how to change sassa payment method, so let me break down what actually works because the system is different depending on your grant type.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you literally have to go in person to the SASSA office—no shortcuts. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last 3 months works), and be ready to fill out their Payment Method Change Form. They'll send everything to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next payment cycle, otherwise you're waiting another month.
But here's the thing—if you're on SRD (that R370 emergency grant), it's completely different. You can change sassa payment method online through their portal without leaving home. Just enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, click it, update your bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify though.
For phone number changes, permanent grants need you to call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office, but SRD has an online contact portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, punch in your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. Way smoother.
One thing that caught me off guard: they won't pay into joint accounts or accounts in someone else's name. Has to be 100% yours. Also, there's a ton of fake SASSA websites out there, so always use the official portal.
Anyone else had issues trying to change sassa payment method? The waiting times are mad.
