Recently, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin shared his bold vision for charting a new direction for Ethereum’s expansion and development. According to PANews, Vitalik expressed his thoughts on how Ethereum can be taken to the next level on the X platform.

Vitalik’s strategy focuses on creating an additional layer that strictly adheres to cyberpunk principles while being technically sophisticated. This new layer is designed for deep integration with the existing Ethereum system and high interactivity.

Future Ethereum Based on Cyberpunk Values

According to Vitalik’s proposal, this new expansion layer will provide Ethereum with several key qualities. Resistance to censorship, compatibility with zero-knowledge proofs (ZK prover), and improvements in consensus levels—all are essential for building a robust and decentralized network. The goal of this vision is to make Ethereum align more closely with true cyberpunk ideals.

Lessons from The Merge—System-Level Change Possibilities

Vitalik cited a significant historical example—the The Merge upgrade, which he described as “flying while changing jet engines.” It was the largest technical transformation in Ethereum’s history. Similar ambitious changes are considered possible in the future.

Vitalik believes that over the next five years (especially as AI-driven coding and formal verification accelerate), Ethereum could have a clear pathway to transition its current system into smart contracts written in new languages.

Future Technical Roadmap

Vitalik outlined four major technical improvements that could transform Ethereum in the coming years:

State Tree Improvements – Making state management more efficient
Lean Consensus – Simplifying and lightening the consensus mechanism
ZK-EVM Verification – Strengthening validation through zero-knowledge proofs
Changes at the Virtual Machine (VM) Level – Reimagining Ethereum’s core computing layer

All of these improvements will be system-level changes comparable to The Merge, making Ethereum more powerful, secure, and decentralized.
