#IranTensionsEscalate

Tensions with Iran are rapidly escalating and have turned into a full-scale conflict in the Middle East. Joint US-Israeli airstrikes, which began on February 28, 2026, targeted Iran's top leadership and military infrastructure. The killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been confirmed. This event led to a 40-day period of official mourning in Iran and the formation of a provisional leadership council. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, at least 555 people have died so far in the US-Israeli attacks; civilian casualties are rising, and more than 130 cities, including Tehran, have been targeted. Iran retaliated with ballistic missile and drone attacks on Israel, killing 11 people. Furthermore, the conflict spilled over into Lebanon with Hezbollah's rocket attacks from Lebanon, leading to intense Israeli bombardment of the Beirut area. Iran's retaliations extended to the Gulf states: US bases and energy facilities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia were targeted. The Qatari air force announced it had shot down two Iranian Su-24 fighter jets. As Iranian-backed groups attacked US targets, the US military confirmed the deaths of four soldiers. The US Department of Defense announced it was sending additional forces to the region. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine stated the operation would "continue for some time," while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke of an opportunity for regime change but stressed it would not be an "endless war." US President Donald Trump called the attacks "Operation Epic Fury," saying it could last 4-5 weeks, but possibly longer. Trump signaled more intense airstrikes, stating "the big wave hasn't arrived yet," and did not rule out the option of sending ground troops. He stated their goals were "to destroy Iran's missile capability, dismantle its navy, and prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons." Nuclear dimension: While Iran claims its Natanz uranium enrichment facility was hit, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi stated that no damage or radiation increase was detected at nuclear facilities (Bushehr, Tehran Research Reactor, etc.). The UN called for restraint from both sides, but tensions show no signs of easing as the conflict enters its third day. Oil prices have risen sharply, raising alarm about the global economy and energy security. Risks to airspace closures and maritime traffic in the region have increased. The possibility of the conflict escalating into a wider regional war appears high.
