Hungarian regulatory authorities restrict access to Polymarket, affecting prediction market users

Abstract generation in progress

Recently, the Hungarian financial regulatory authority, Szabályozott Tevékenységek Felügyeleti Hatósága, has temporarily blocked the domain and subdomains of the prediction market platform Polymarket. Users within Hungary are currently unable to access the platform, and this restriction will remain in place until the regulatory review is completed.

Reason for the Regulatory Block

The Hungarian regulator classified Polymarket as a gambling activity and issued a ruling that it is illegal. Given the unclear legal status of prediction markets, the regulatory authority appears to have taken preventive measures. It is reported that access to the service from Hungarian IP addresses will be blocked until the ongoing review process is completed.

Direct Impact on Hungarian Users

As a result of this action, residents of Hungary can no longer access Polymarket through usual channels. Some users are already experiencing technical restrictions when trying to connect to the platform. This Hungarian regulatory measure serves as an example of how global prediction market services can conflict with regional regulatory environments.
