Animoca Brands acquires SOMO: How far can a cross-game ecosystem of digital collectibles go?

Abstract generation in progress

【Chain Wen】The gaming ecosystem is making another big move. Animoca Brands officially announced that it has successfully acquired digital collectibles and game developer SOMO. This merger integrates SOMO’s three core products—《SOMO Codex》, 《SOMO Duel》, and flagship title 《SOMO Battleground》. In the future, the digital collectibles from these games will support cross-game circulation, live streaming, and trading.

What does this mean? Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, provided an answer: SOMO is building a “cultural operating system” for collectibles. This positioning perfectly complements Animoca’s existing investment layout. The next plan is to leverage Animoca’s powerful global gaming ecosystem, community base, and partner network to expand SOMO’s brand influence across more platforms and grow the community.

In other words, this is not just an acquisition but more like an ecological integration of two chains—using SOMO’s innovation in collectibles combined with Animoca’s platform influence to create a truly cross-chain, cross-game NFT ecosystem. This approach is worth paying attention to.

This is another grand show of ecosystem integration. Cross-game circulation sounds good, but it still depends on how it will be implemented later.

It's Animoca again. This guy is really laying out his plans, acquiring and acquiring without stopping. But the idea of cross-game collectibles sounds like trying to create a unified platform—whether it succeeds depends on execution. --- A cultural operating system? Sounds impressive, but it feels like they're just talking the same old talk. Will it really catch on? --- After SOMO was acquired, it feels less independent. Whether integrating into the larger ecosystem is good or bad depends on how they handle it later. --- It's the same cross-game concept again. I just wonder if players will actually pay for this, or if it's just another pie in the sky. --- With Animoca's move, it seems like they're betting that this sector can really take off. Otherwise, why spend so much on acquisitions?

Cross-game circulation sounds good, but I'm worried it's just empty talk... --- Animoca didn't spend money in vain this time; SOMO's ecosystem does have some substance. --- Cultural operating system? That's so high-level to say, but in the end, it's just throwing money into game development. --- But integrating three games together makes the logic quite clear; worth paying attention to. --- Another Web3 game acquisition—are they defining the future or just trying to survive? --- Partnership networks and such are getting tiresome to hear, but the key is whether good games can be produced. --- Are cross-game collectible ecosystems really useful, or just hype? --- Yat Siu's ambition to build a gaming ecosystem is indeed grand. --- SOMO was acquired; what about the original community? Will it be diluted?

Cross-game circulation sounds good, but it still depends on the actual implementation... By the way, Animoca is buying again. Will they come up with any new tricks this time?

Cross-game circulation sounds pretty impressive, but how many people can actually use it... --- Another ecosystem integration story. The key is whether it can be implemented. --- Yat Siu mentioned a cultural operating system; this term does sound like good packaging. --- SOMO has been acquired, it feels like they are about to start relying on their old strengths again. --- Three games bundled for sale. What is Animoca after this time? --- Cross-game circulation of collectibles? Sounds easy, but how feasible is it to actually implement? --- This acquisition seems to be just for expanding the territory. When will real innovation come?

Cross-game circulation sounds good, but I don't know how long it will last. Animoca is once again buying furiously. Will they come up with something new this time? The term "cultural operating system"... sounds a bit exaggerated. It feels like the concept of collectibles is almost everywhere now. Can they come up with a new idea? I haven't heard of any of these three SOMO games. Animoca just calls it an ecosystem, so be it. It's that cross-chain, cross-game approach again. Does anyone really use it? Pouring money into the ecosystem... if no one plays, it would be awkward haha. This acquisition, to put it simply, is Animoca wanting to create a "universal platform" for games, but whether reality will give face or not remains to be seen.
