Tether obtains key regulatory approval in Abu Dhabi, providing strategic support for USDT’s global compliance path

On December 9, according to Tether’s official announcement, its issued US dollar stablecoin USDT has obtained a key regulatory license in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) in the United Arab Emirates.

Specifically, ADGM has officially recognized USDT as an “Accepted Financial Reference Token” (AFRT), granting authorization for its use by financial institutions operating under the market’s regulatory framework.

Currently, the token can legally conduct USDT-related business on nine major blockchains, including Aptos, Celo, Cosmos, Kaia, Near, Polkadot, Tezos, TON, and TRON.

Notably, this token operation license marks a significant expansion of ADGM’s regulatory framework. Previously, ADGM had approved the use of USDT on the Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche networks.

Now, the scope of approval almost covers all major blockchain ecosystems supported by Tether, meaning that compliant use cases for USDT within ADGM’s jurisdiction have reached unprecedented breadth.

From a development perspective, this not only provides financial institutions with a clear compliance path and legal certainty for using the world’s largest stablecoin in a multi-chain environment, but also significantly enhances stablecoin-based financial interoperability across different blockchain networks.

In summary, this move demonstrates that the UAE is becoming more mature and open in its regulatory practices as a global digital asset hub, and its forward-looking rules provide a solid foundation for industry innovation.
