One sign or two? The dilemma of the dollar symbol that no one told you about 💸

What a hassle with this topic! I've been writing “$” for years and never stopped to think if I was using the “correct” version. As if we didn't already have enough concerns with the volatility of cryptocurrencies, now it turns out that even the symbol has variations.

Let's take a closer look at this nonsense:

With a line ($): The minimalist version that dominates the digital world. Practical, simple, and omnipresent. You find it everywhere, from your banking app to those exchanges that suck our fees.

With two lines (฿): Supposedly more “historic” because it represents the union of U and S (United States). Bah, pure visual romanticism that no one uses anymore except in pretentious documents.

And you know what? I couldn't care less which one is “correct” officially. In my experience, when we talk about real money, no one pays attention to whether your symbol has one or two lines. The only thing that matters is the number of zeros that accompany it.

It is ironic that we worry so much about how to write the symbol while digital coins are completely changing the financial paradigm. For many of us who trade with USDC and other stablecoins, these debates are almost irrelevant.

And since we are at it, why are we still using such an outdated symbol? The digital dollar will likely come soon with its own symbol, and we will forget about these absurd discussions.

I prefer the simple version, the one-liner. Not out of tradition or to be “correct”, but because it requires less effort to write. In the crypto world, where every second counts, efficiency is what matters.
