A comprehensive overview! Six hours after the ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran takes effect, a summary of all parties' developments
The United States and Iran announced a ceasefire and the start of two weeks of negotiations on Beijing time on the 8th (7th evening U.S. Eastern Time). The following are the latest statements by the parties regarding the ceasefire:
——United States
U.S. President Trump said in a post on social media that after speaking with Pakistan, he agreed to pause attacks and bombings on Iran for two weeks, on the condition that Iran agrees to “fully, immediately, and safely” open the Strait of Hormuz, and he emphasized that “this will be a two-way ceasefire.”
Trump said the reason for this decision is that the U.S. “has achieved and exceeded all military objectives.” In addition, regarding the final agreement on building “long-term peace” with Iran and achieving peace in the Middle East, substantial progress has also been made.
He said that the U.S. received a 10-point proposal put forward by Iran and believes the proposal can serve as a feasible basis for conducting negotiations. On issues over which the two sides previously differed, the U.S. and Iran have now essentially reached consensus. And this two-week buffer period will help both sides finally finalize and reach the agreement.
In a post on social media, U.S. President Trump wrote that the United States will help address the Strait of Hormuz’s “shipping congestion” problem—“there will be many positive actions, and great wealth will be created.” He said, “Iran can begin the rebuilding process. We will ship all kinds of supplies, and ‘stay there’ to ensure everything goes smoothly.”
In an interview with Agence France-Presse, Trump said the Iran uranium enrichment issue will be “handled perfectly.” For the U.S., the two-week U.S.-Iran ceasefire is a “complete and total victory.”
The U.S. newspaper The New York Times, citing two U.S. officials, reported that before Trump announced the ceasefire with Iran, he made phone calls to the Pakistan Army Chief of Staff Munir and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, respectively. The report said Munir is a key point of contact between the United States and Iran.
According to a report by U.S. cable news CNN, the Trump administration is preparing for possible in-person talks between U.S. and Iranian officials. U.S. Vice President Vance, U.S. presidential special envoy Witkoff, and Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, are expected to attend the talks.
U.S. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said: “I’m glad Trump backed down, and he’s now desperately trying to find a way out of his absurd blustering.”
——Iran
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement saying that, based on the advice of Iran’s Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei and approval by the Supreme National Security Council, Iran will hold two weeks of talks with the U.S. in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on the 10th, but Iran has “complete lack of trust” in the U.S. With mutual agreement, the talks’ duration may be extended.
Iranian media disclosed the 10 proposed ceasefire terms put forward by Iran, but the content is not fully consistent.
According to a report by Iran’s Islamic Republic of Broadcasting and Television, the 10 terms are: 1. The U.S. should, in principle, guarantee that it will not infringe on Iran; 2. Establish a safe passage agreement for the Strait of Hormuz to ensure Iran’s dominant position; 3. Accept Iran’s uranium enrichment activities; 4. Lift all primary sanctions imposed on Iran; 5. Lift all secondary sanctions imposed on Iran; 6. Revoke relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council; 7. Revoke relevant resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency; 8. Pay compensation to Iran; 9. Withdraw U.S. combat forces from the Middle East region; 10. Stop wars on all fronts such as those in Lebanon.
In addition to the above, Iran’s Fars News Agency, citing sources, reported that the terms proposed by Iran also include: under the safe passage agreement, Iran would allow a limited number of ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day under Iran’s supervision for two weeks; Iran pledges not to develop nuclear weapons; Iran agrees to hold talks with countries in the region on bilateral and multilateral peace treaties on the premise of protecting its national interests; and all parties must ensure they do not infringe on Iran’s allies.
According to reports by U.S. media, Iran and Oman will collect transit fees for the Strait of Hormuz. Iran will use the collected fees for reconstruction. This information has not yet been confirmed by Iran’s official side.
——Israel
Israel’s Channel 12 television, citing statements from White House officials, reported that Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire and will suspend airstrikes on Iran for two weeks. The outlet also cited statements from Israeli officials, saying that the ceasefire will take effect after Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel supports the ceasefire, but the ceasefire does not include Lebanon.
According to local time reports from Lebanon on the 8th, Israel launched airstrikes on the morning of that day on the southern Lebanon Tir area. Later, the reporter learned that Israel bombed an ambulance in the town of Khaleh in the Tir area that day, resulting in 4 deaths.
——Pakistan
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz confirmed that Iran, the United States, and each side’s respective allies agreed to immediately ceasefire at all locations, including Lebanon and other areas, effective starting today. He invited representatives from both the U.S. and Iran to hold further talks in Islamabad on the 10th to reach a final agreement to resolve all disputes.
