Three and a half hours to disassemble the new SU7 into parts! Summary of Lei Jun's live broadcast content
Fast Technology April 2 news: Lei Jun, in the latest livestream, took the new-generation SU7 apart from the complete vehicle down to the component level. It took 3.5 hours, during which he introduced the new car’s design, performance, quality, and more from the inside out.
The content summary is as follows:
Today we tore down a new SU7 Pro model. We also specifically brought a new SU7 Max model to do real-vehicle function demos. Meanwhile, we also invited automotive safety experts—Zhu Sichan, a former professor from the School of Automotive Engineering at Tongji University—to give everyone a crash-safety knowledge lesson, using a white-body display mockup and a new-generation SU7 that has undergone a crash test.
(1)The new SU7 car paint process design uses 3C2B. Simply put, it means three coats of spraying and two bake cycles. The first three layers are galvanized steel sheet, pre-treatment, and electrophoresis; their role is corrosion protection. The fourth layer (1C) is the mid-coat, which is very important: it unifies the base color, fills defects, and determines the final look and feel of the clearcoat. It is the foundation for high-end paint surface effects, with high toughness and high elasticity—absorbing impact energy and improving stone-chip resistance. After that comes baking (1B): 20 minutes of high-temperature holding at 160℃ to increase paint adhesion. The fifth layer (2C) is color coat, which determines how the color and effects of different car colors are presented. Then comes flash drying: short-time evaporation of solvents and water in the wet paint film so the color coat fully separates from the clearcoat that comes afterward, ensuring pure color perception and a sense of depth. The sixth layer (3C) is the clearcoat: it protects the color coat, usually sprayed in two coats to provide better gloss. Finally, baking (2B): hold at 140℃ for 20 minutes so the paint surface is beautiful, with high gloss and scratch resistance.
(2)The core of the new-generation SU7’s double-layer forged flower (meihua) wheels is the milling process. Using 22 different tools, it mills the profile for 13 hours first, then after painting and applying primer, it mills the dragon-scale pattern for 6 hours. Precision is controlled down to the micrometer level—about the diameter of a human hair.
(3)For the front bumper section, SU7’s exterior design goal is to withstand the test of time, and if it doesn’t need changing, we don’t change it. In terms of exterior appearance, due to functional reasons, there are detail changes on the front grille. The new 4D mmWave radar is added, with an active grille shutter (AGS) that has 100 adjustable levels. On the Max version, there are braking air ducts unique to both sides, providing stronger cooling efficiency for the braking system to keep efficient cooling at all times.
(4)The front water-drop headlights have four lighting-module groups. High-power LEDs are used, with thick copper-based substrates and cylindrical heat sinks with larger heat-dissipation areas. This increases active air cooling, and the setup includes 1 fan and 2 dual air ducts arranged at 90°. The rear halo taillights have very high nighttime distinctiveness. Using spraying + laser craft, the three-layer halo effect is better. There are 360 LEDs in total, with a minimum spacing of 10mm per LED, ensuring uniform halo lighting and quality feel.
(5)The side mirrors use an ultra-narrow frame with a goose-egg stone shape—attractive in appearance and also highly functional and practical. They integrate a surround-view camera and microphone, with a lens area ratio of 90.7%. There is also BSD blind-spot warning and a heating layer on the back of the lens. On the Max version, there is an anti-glare function (EC dimming): when strong light is detected, the mirror surface automatically dims.
(6)The new-generation SU7 upgrades the electric front trunk: power opening and closing, with multiple opening/closing methods. These include the vehicle-external Xiaoi voice (with voiceprint recognition, with safety ensured), physical buttons outside the vehicle, and UWB close-range vehicle control—very convenient. The front trunk has a capacity of 105L, which can fit 20-inch carry-on suitcases.
(7)The slanted radiator in the front bay saves space compared to a vertical layout. An integrated die-cast aluminum triangular beam is used, which won the Best Structural Award at a die-casting competition. From left to right, the triangular beam consists of: the refrigerant integrated module, compressor + PTC dual-in-one, and the water-circuit integrated module. The whole assembly is fixed on the triangular beam. The front bay also has electric struts and an active hood. The active pop-up hood structure, in the event of an accident, will lift up to create a crumple buffer space, reducing harm to pedestrians outside the car.
(1)The new SU7 has an all-new center console design with a symmetrical layout and a horizontal design. The cabin’s AI “cute pet” can be customized. The open storage space has a volume of 18.4L, so shoes and bags can be placed in easily. At the same time, it upgrades the compressor refrigerator.
(2)Door panels feature large-area soft padding, adding quilting, along with a high-gloss metal process. The door audio system is upgraded with a metal mesh cover to improve the speaker’s sound transmission rate. Sound insulation foam covers over 90% of the door-panel area.
(3)The comfort and functionality of the seats across the whole vehicle are improved. The driver’s seat is standard across all models with 18-way adjustment. The front passenger seat is upgraded to a zero-gravity seat. The rear seats are upgraded with sleeping headrests. Today we showed the driver’s seat cross-section—7 layers of materials from the inside out. The high-frequency contact surfaces use 100% soft-touch fabric, and they have passed the OEKO-TEX 100 Class I certification, so infants and pregnant women can safely make contact with it.
(4)25 speakers: 7 horizontal surround main sound channels, 1 independent low-frequency bass speaker, and 4 overhead sound channels—forming a 7.1.4-channel system. A 3-module 8-microphone array supports pickup across five audio zones.
(1)The new SU7 “four-in-one domain control module” integrates the previously separate cabin, auxiliary driving, whole-vehicle control, and communication modules into one. Its volume becomes smaller and its mass is greatly reduced.
(2)Three main area controllers: FZCU is responsible for front-bay body control and core functions such as the VCU and thermal management; LZCU handles left-side loads related to door locks, power windows, seats, and interior/exterior lights; RZCU handles right-side loads related to door locks, power windows, seats, tailgate, and interior/exterior lights. In the power distribution layer, Xiaomi’s electronic and electrical architecture is also very safe. It uses eFuse electronic fuses, with high detection accuracy and fast power-off execution. They are reusable, have a long service life, and low operation and maintenance costs.
(3)For auxiliary driving hardware, the new SU7 is fully equipped across the entire lineup. 1 laser radar measures the shape of the space in front more accurately, and it can still be seen at night—making night driving safer and more reassuring. 1 4D mmWave radar is newly added to the new-generation SU7, integrated into the front bumper, and is good at tracking dynamic targets. There are 12 ultrasonic radars across the whole vehicle, improving near-distance obstacle detection capability—making parking easier and driving more安心. There are 11 cameras in total, including 7 surround-view cameras and 4 surround cameras. When driving with auxiliary driving, they help recognize vehicles, pedestrians, and road information; during parking, they also make things more comfortable and reduce the risk of scrapes.
(1)The Xiaomi JiaoLong (Jiaolong) chassis is a high-performance intelligent chassis system that deeply integrates soft and hard technologies. It fuses the new-generation four-domain-in-one controller, chassis hardware, and intelligent sensing. Multiple systems coordinate in soft control together, ensuring precision, stability, and safety. The front uses double-wishbone suspension, and the rear uses a five-link structure, delivering excellent stability and limit handling, good comfort, clear road feel, and precise control. When braking or cornering, it maintains the optimal posture of all four wheels to ensure stability. When filtering out tiny bumps and vibrations, it is very flexible. On roads with large undulations, it still provides ample support. The whole lineup is standard with 265mm wide rear tires, delivering even stronger grip. At the same time, it has more refined steering feel: a U-turn in one go across three lanes—flexible and easy to drive. An armored cage-style body structure provides rigidity so control transfer is more direct, more linear, and more controllable, making the vehicle feel tighter dynamically. With an integrated closed dual-chamber air spring and CDC, it adjusts suspension stiffness and height in real time. CDC adjusts the electromagnetic oil-liquid valve to change the fluid’s cross-section and to adjust damping in real time.
(2)The braking system has a linear brake pedal feel and good resistance to heat fade. The Standard and Pro versions use an NAO formulation to improve comfort. A design of quiet slots further reduces noise. All models are standard with front four-piston fixed calipers, with lower dragging torque. CLTC range is increased by up to 3km. The Max version is equipped with Brembo® front four-piston fixed calipers, and also uses low-metal brake pads and front drilled ventilated brake discs, delivering more precise braking force.
Engineers prepared a white-body display fixture and a new-generation SU7 that underwent a crash test. From the white-body, you can see that the first protective measure in a front-end collision is the 7-series aviation aluminum front anti-collision beam with a width of 1490mm, covering 76% of the vehicle body width. The energy-absorbing box has a deformable zone of 280mm. Professor Zhu Sichan explained: to achieve a five-star rating, a 200mm energy-absorbing box would be enough, but by making it 280mm, there is more redundancy and it provides even better protection for the other vehicle.
The crash test vehicle uses a 50% offset collision. The impact speed is 60km/h. The relative speed of the collision test is 120km/h. The collision energy is about 1.44 times that of the standard test condition—far beyond the standard test condition. In the crash test vehicle, the front crumple zone absorbs energy; the front anti-collision beam clearly deforms and absorbs energy without tearing. In the longitudinal member induction channel area on the other collision side, bending occurs, showing that the anti-collision beam effectively dispersed the collision force to the other side. On the collision side, the energy-absorbing box crumples; the longitudinal member bends to absorb energy and completes the load release. The A-pillar does not deform; the windshield does not break. The occupant cabin structure remains intact, achieving good protection. Also, all doors across the whole vehicle can be opened normally by mechanical means.
The new-generation SU7’s proportion of high-strength steel and aluminum alloy reaches 90.3%. Xiaomi’s 2200MPa super-strong steel is applied in the four-door anti-collision beams, as well as the “embedded roll-over protection frame” that runs through from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. With a longer-length heat-venting expansion tube, it provides better protection against drilling and raking scenarios. Reinforcement plates of 1500MPa and 2000MPa are used for the front surrounds, and there is also a 1500MPa cross member that runs through the front surrounds to provide effective protection and reduce the risk of intrusion into the front surrounds during a collision. The three-stage rear floor design balances safety and repair economics. The rear anti-collision beam and energy-absorbing box are low-speed crumple zones; the rear longitudinal members are medium-to-high-speed crumple zones. Finally, there is an integrated large die-cast rear floor. In general collisions, only damaged components need replacement—no need to replace the large die-cast rear floor. In severe collisions, the large die-cast rear floor can protect occupants by relying on its high-strength performance.
The new-generation SU7 comes standard with 9 airbags. It adds 2 rear-side airbags, further improving safety protection for the shoulders, chest and abdomen of rear passengers in side-impact scenarios. There are also side air curtains made of one-piece woven-formed air bags, improving the pressure-holding ability. They cover from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. The asymmetric front passenger airbags provide better head protection in offset collisions.
The new-generation SU7 battery pack upgrades hardcore physical protection. In the new-generation SU7 Pro, both the front and rear cross members of the battery pack are die-cast parts made from Xiaomi Titan alloy material. The die-cast parts, along with the aluminum battery-frame structures extruded on both sides, form a solid battery-pack frame, which provides very good protection in front and rear collisions. The top of the battery pack has two 1500MPa high-strength steel seat cross beams and two 2000MPa high-strength steel floor cross beams. In combination with the extruded aluminum battery-frame structure, the vehicle’s ultra-wide nine-square door sill beam provides very good protection against side collisions. A new X-shaped beam is added in front of the battery pack, along with a 1500MPa anti-scratch under-floor cross beam, building the first line of defense against protection at the bottom of the battery pack in advance. It can push away obstacles early and reduce the risk of bottom impacts on the battery pack. The high-strength underbody protection plate forms the second line of defense: ballistic coating, corrosion resistance, scratch resistance, impact resistance, and puncture resistance. It effectively prevents underbody scraping, scuffing, or impacts from sharp objects—allowing better handling of high-risk conditions.
The new-generation SU7’s battery thermal safety capability is outstanding. The high-temperature full-charge needle-prick test passes perfectly. During the test, in the new-generation SU7 Max’s ternary lithium battery pack, under 55°C high temperature and full-charge conditions, the needle-prick triggers thermal runaway, but there is no thermal propagation, no fire, and no explosion. The test standard far exceeds the national standard. The SU7 Max battery pack’s anti-thermal-propagation design focuses on relieving, dissipating, and isolating. First, the “cell inverted design” removes most of the heat. Next, “dual large-surface water-cooling plates” perform large-area heat dissipation. Finally, it relies on “aerogel” to achieve precise internal separation, minimizing the risk of thermal propagation between cells.
The new-generation SU7 was released on March 19. After 4 days, deliveries began. Within 9 days, deliveries exceeded 7,000 units. Currently, the number of orders locked for the new-generation SU7 has already exceeded 40k units. The delivery speed of the new-generation SU7 set a record. We truly made it so that it is released and delivered at the same time, significantly improving delivery speed and user experience. Last Monday, we held the first delivery ceremony at Xiaomi’s Shenzhen headquarters. Going forward, we plan to hold first delivery ceremonies in more cities.
Among the first batch of new-generation SU7 owners, there are many tech industry entrepreneurs. Female users account for 34%, and the trade-in and upgrade ratio is 60–70%. According to a blogger’s statistics, 70% of users had no comparisons, 20% compared with the Model 3, and 10% compared with BBA. In other words, 70% of new users did not consider other brands and chose the new-generation SU7 directly. The three most popular colors are indigo stone green, elegant gray, and flowing gold powder. In particular, the option rate for indigo stone green is as high as 25%. The most popular interior color is still mist purple.
