Macron states that France may send troops to the Strait of Hormuz

Nicosia News: According to Cypriot media, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on the 9th that France will maintain its military presence in the Mediterranean and Red Sea, including deploying multiple warships such as aircraft carriers. The scope of deployment may eventually include the Strait of Hormuz to ensure regional shipping safety and European interests.

The website of Cypriot newspaper “Phileleftheros” reported that Macron, speaking at the Paphos Air Force Base in southwestern Cyprus, said, “Attacking Cyprus is attacking Europe.” France will continue to cooperate with partner countries to safeguard the safety of European citizens and the freedom of international shipping lanes, emphasizing that these actions will remain defensive in nature.

On the same day, Macron arrived in Cyprus and held a trilateral meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

After the meeting, Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus will not participate in any military actions and will maintain a humanitarian and peaceful role.

Previously, the Cypriot government issued a statement saying that a drone attacked the UK’s Akrotiri Air Force Base in Cyprus in the early hours of the 2nd of this month, causing “limited damage.” That afternoon, British military aircraft intercepted two drones attempting to attack the base. These incidents have heightened local security tensions and attracted the attention of neighboring countries. At Cyprus’s request, France, Greece, the UK, Italy, and other countries have provided military support.

Due to disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, energy supply risks have increased, leading to a sharp rise in international oil and gas prices.
