Original Link:
Social media platform X announced plans to roll out “Starterpacks,” a new onboarding feature designed to help new users discover accounts and feeds based on specific interests including cryptocurrency and technology.
The feature will offer curated lists of accounts across various categories and countries. The crypto category will include content focused on memecoin trading, real-time market trends, and sentiment from active traders. Users will be able to select interests during onboarding and follow curated account lists.
Declining Crypto Visibility on X
The announcement follows recent controversy surrounding crypto content visibility on X. Cryptocurrency users have reported declining visibility of crypto-related posts. Bitcoin cypherpunk Jameson Lopp reported that posts containing “Bitcoin” on X totaled 96 million in 2025, representing a 32% decrease year-over-year.
Vitalik’s Call for Decentralized Social Media
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin addressed the broader issue of social media platforms, stating the need for “mass communication tools that serve the user’s long-term interest, not maximize short-term engagement.” Buterin indicated plans to return to decentralized social media platforms in 2026.
Buterin noted that decentralized social media projects have faced challenges, stating that such platforms “should be run by people who deeply believe in the ‘social’ part, and are motivated first and foremost by solving the problems of social.”

It is worth noting that the design logic of X's Starterpacks is actually aimed at optimizing user acquisition costs — from a data perspective, new user retention rates typically drop to around 23% on day 7, but precise interest matching can boost this metric to 42%.

Can starter packs really attract newbies to get involved? It still feels too mild.

starterpack algorithm is basically just wallet clustering disguised as discovery... pattern recognition for the masses. wonder what behavioral indicators they're actually tracking beneath the surface
