U.S. media: As the conflict with Israel escalates, Chinese citizens are fleeing Iran.
According to the Gate News bot and CNN reports, as the conflict with Israel escalates, hundreds of Chinese workers, students, and tourists are fleeing or being evacuated from Iran to neighboring countries.
Masa Li, a 24-year-old Chinese citizen, has been living and working in Tehran for the past few years. After three days of bombardment in Tehran, she fled the city on Monday.
"At night, we take turns keeping watch. There are explosions every night, lasting until two or three in the morning," she said, adding that she has witnessed the city suffer multiple attacks in the area where she lives.
On the last day, Li decided to flee with nine colleagues and friends. They spent over 30 hours reaching the Armenian border—due to the vehicle breaking down repeatedly and frequent stops for questioning and phone checks by police and military personnel, their journey was forced to come to a halt.
"I didn't expect this to really happen," Li told CNN in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. "There were two small-scale conflicts last year, but I didn't expect the situation to escalate so quickly this time."
Many Chinese people in Iran work for Chinese companies that invest in this oil-rich country. For many years, China has been Iran's largest trading partner and the largest buyer of its oil.
According to reports, the Chinese embassy began evacuating Chinese citizens from Tehran on Tuesday.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Thursday that more than 1,600 Chinese citizens have been evacuated from Iran, and several hundred Chinese citizens have been evacuated from Israel.
