Core Lightning 23.08, the most recent version of the client for the Bitcoin Lightning Network, includes a number of improvements that target both users and developers. Among them, the inclusion of Taproot as a default option for addresses and splicing for the movement of bitcoins (BTC) between payment channels stands out.
As explained in the Core Lightning 23.08 repository, generated addresses adopt the Taproot format by default, which improves the privacy and security of transactions. Taproot is a Bitcoin update dating back to November 2021.
In addition to Taproot, an experimental option called “experimental-splicing,” was introduced in Core Lightning 23.08, which allows you to move backgrounds in and out of live channels. As its name indicates, it is still in the testing phase within the framework of this client.
Splicing (“union” or “empalme” in Spanish) is a development that allows funds to be moved freely between payment channels, without the need to open and close them, which reduces costs by demanding less network commission payments for these transfers.
Other new functions that users will be able to enjoy have to do with, for example, improvements in payment plugins. Payment plugins determine the parameters for making payments. For example, they can optimize the payment route to find the most economical or efficient route. Thus, ensuring a smoother user experience when using the network.
In addition, the update introduces the "setconfig" command, which allows changes to be made to the node's configuration dynamically without the need for a reboot, increasing configuration flexibility. Finally, support for seed phrase backups using the BIP-93 standard was added.
